WordPress is a free and open-source Content Management System(CMS) based on PHP and MySQL. WordPress is the most popular CMS with a market share of 34% of all websites. Which means WordPress powers 34% of all the websites on the Internet, including those without a content management system (CMS) or with a custom-coded CMS. Two features which make WordPress a powerful CMS is its plugin architecture and a template system. It lets you install themes and plugins to change its look or to add any feature to your website.

WordPress is very easy and it let you create a brand new website with just a few clicks. You can create a WordPress website either via WordPress.com or via self-hosted WordPress on your own hosting.

To install WordPress on a server you need to have a domain and hosting. First, buy a domain or get one for free from Freenom. Secondly, buy hosting or get free hosting.

Once you have a domain and hosting. Navigate to you hosting Cpanel Follow the below steps.

Install WordPress on a Server

  1. Navigate to your Cpanel of hosting.
  2. Most hosting provide automatic WordPress install tool (eg. Auto Installer, Softaculous, etc) which sets up WordPress for you. So, find it and click on it.
  3. Select WordPress when it asks which script to install > Then Follow the on-screen instructions. And WordPress should be installed successfully.

Note: If WordPress installed successfully, no need to perform further steps. You can confirm the installation by visiting the root domain or where you installed WordPress.

If you didn’t find any automatic installer tool or want to install WordPress manually on server follow the steps.

  1.  First, download WordPress from wordpress.org.
  2. Then upload the WordPress package to your server via File Manager or FTP.
  3. Extract the package on the root directory( i.e public_html folder ) or another folder if you want to install it on a separate folder.
  4. Navigate to databases > Create a database and add a user to the database. Remember the database username and password.
  5. Using File manager navigate to your domain root directory and search for the file “wp-config-sample.php” and rename it to “wp-config.php”.
  6. Select the “wp-config.php” file > Right Click > Select Edit.
  7. In the file update the database name, database username, and database password and save and exit.
  8. Now open the URL where you installed WordPress and follow the instructions and WordPress should be installed successfully.

Congratulations enjoy your new WordPress website.

Install WordPress on Localhost

And if you want to install WordPress on local machine/localhost, follow the steps below.

  1. First to run WordPress on your local machine. First, install a XAMPP or WAMP server on your computer.
  2. Then, download the WordPress package.
  3.  Then, Navigate to the root directory of the server (htdocs for XAMPP, www for WAMP).
  4. Then create a folder where you want to install WordPress.( for example my site)
  5. Now, extract the files from the WordPress Package to the ‘mysite’ directory.
  6. Goto PhpMyAdmin (“http://localhost/phpmyadmin/”) and create a database. If it asks for a password enter username ‘root’ and password blank.
  7. Locate file “wp-config-sample.php” and rename it to “wp-config.php”.
  8. Select the “wp-config.php” file > Right Click > Select Edit.
  9. In the file update the database name, database username, and database password and save and close.
  10. Now open the URL on browser “http://localhost/mysite/” and follow the instructions and WordPress should be installed successfully.
